American Beauty, 1892, by Elbridge Ayer Burbank was one of seven paintings in a series of beautiful and sensitive portraits of African-American children. The child depicted was Willie Trimbles, who was said to have become a local celebrity after this work became well known, and remained lifelong friends with the artist.
