This illustration by Maxfield Parrish titled Nymph reading a book (also known simply as The Reader) was published as a cover for Scribner's Magazine in August 1897. The artwork depicts a woman, sometimes described as a forest nymph, sitting in a wooded glade and reading a book. This early work by Parrish is considered an example of American Art Nouveau illustration.

Parrish was a highly popular artist during the "Golden Age of Illustration," known for his distinctive use of vibrant "Parrish blue" and his ability to create ethereal, fantastical landscapes.
