This vintage Impressionism/Academicism styled art print of Séléné, Greek goddess and personification of the moon, by Albert Aublet, 1880 is a captivating tribute to the celestial goddess.
When Albert Aublet originally exhibited this piece (later known as The New Moon), at the Salon of Paris in 1879, the work was accompanied by a poem written by his friend, Charles Grandmougin (translated from the French):
Barely hatched, the silver stars are trembling,
At the foot of the golden mountains the lake becomes obscure,
And, through thin pink clouds, she is sailing,
The blonde Séléné is awaking into the azure;
Like a rounded arch, she is floating and rising,
Slowly stretching her beautiful rejuvenated body,
Eyes closed, and savoring at the heart of the infinity,
All the delights from the night and the dreaming.
Our vintage art prints are printed in-house of a small 100% women owned studio, Rock Paper Scissors, in New York, New York, on archival heavyweight matte paper with fine art pigment-based ink.
